Lettered cover hook

The international studio for May, May 1897 - poster

The pattern

This still is filed under Lettered cover hook.

Define

The cover is the hook, and the hook is lettering: a title treated as an image.

Mechanism

Type as bait. The words are drawn so they stop the hand before the contents are known.

Verdict

A journal, book, or issue must sell itself on a rack or a feed

Why it works

The cover is a demonstration, not a description. A magazine selling fine and applied art earns belief by making the buyer's first contact with it a piece of fine applied art, so the craft claim is proved before the copy makes it. The typographic hierarchy is brutally simple - one word, Studio, is given four times the weight of anything else, which makes the title readable at newsstand distance while the seven-line credit block below reads only in the hand. Printing one dark ink on uncoated tan stock is both a cost decision and a style decision: it forces contrast and gives the sheet an antiquarian, hand-pressed character that a four-colour job would have lost.

Steal this when

Use this when your product is taste, craft or design itself and the buyer can judge quality by looking. Put one enormous piece of custom lettering, one small illustration and one dense block of facts on a coloured stock in a single ink, and let the execution carry the claim.
