Why it works
Title and author are set in identical lettering as two horizontal bands, top and bottom, so the picture is clamped between them and the eye cannot leave the sheet without reading both. Scale does the arguing about the subject: she fills the frame at full height while the man is a doll beyond the net, which states the book's premise before anyone reads a line of it. The palette is two inks and bare paper, so the orange of the tie inside the picture ties to the orange of the lettering outside it and the whole sheet reads as one object at distance.
Steal this when
Use this when the title itself is the hook and the author is the second hook. Band both in the same lettering top and bottom, clamp a single picture between them, and settle the argument with relative scale inside the image rather than with any explanatory copy.
