Why it works
The cover is built as three stacked bands with the whole middle left empty, which makes a small animal read as large - the negative space is the design. Lettering is drawn to the trim rather than centred with polite margins, so the type behaves like a printed block from the woodcut tradition instead of like a title page. The single flat ochre silhouette with a wobbling black contour is the Beggarstaff method: remove modelling, keep only the outline that identifies the creature, and let one extra colour do all the work. Setting the author's name at the same weight and width as the title turns the byline into part of the architecture rather than a credit.
Steal this when
Use this when the name of the thing and a picture of the thing are the same message - say it once in lettering, once as a flat silhouette, and leave the middle of the sheet empty. Right for covers, packaging and posters that must survive being seen small and from a distance.
