Lettered cover hook

Pierre Puvis de Chavannes, a sketch, Lily Lewis Rood (1895) - poster

The pattern

This still is filed under Lettered cover hook.

Define

The cover is the hook, and the hook is lettering: a title treated as an image.

Mechanism

Type as bait. The words are drawn so they stop the hand before the contents are known.

Verdict

A journal, book, or issue must sell itself on a rack or a feed

Why it works

Type and image occupy the same plane rather than being stacked, so the letters read as part of the decorative field and the poster holds together as one flat surface, which is exactly the mural flatness Puvis de Chavannes was known for. The chrome yellow does the stopping power at distance while the black capitals do the reading at close range, a two-distance design. Letting the leaves overlap the letterforms risks legibility and buys unity, a trade the designer takes knowingly because the title is short and the words are famous.

Steal this when

Steal this when the form of the piece can quietly argue the same thing the words claim, for example a design book that is itself well designed. The interlocked type-over-image approach works when your headline is short, high-contrast and already familiar to the reader.
