The pattern

This still is filed under Lettered cover hook.

Define

The cover is the hook, and the hook is lettering: a title treated as an image.

Mechanism

Type as bait. The words are drawn so they stop the hand before the contents are known.

Verdict

A journal, book, or issue must sell itself on a rack or a feed

Why it works

The cover treats the composition as merchandise for an event: the picture is reportage of a famous mail route, not an illustration of the music, so the sheet sells topical interest to people who cannot judge a galop. The circular vignette fades to nothing at its edge, which lets the lithographer spend all the detail at the centre and leave the paper to do the rest - cheap and atmospheric at once. The arched title over the circle and the stepped title block below it hold the picture in a typographic sandwich, so the eye enters at the name, drops through the scene, and lands on the composer. Putting the price scale for three arrangements in a corner of the cover converts a browser into a specific purchase without a sales line.

Steal this when

Use this when the thing you are selling is hard to judge before purchase and something newsworthy is attached to it. Lead with a picture of the event rather than the product, then let a small corner of the sheet do the version-and-price work.
