Lettered cover hook

Ontwerp voor een affiche voor Kettner's Pianohandel Heiligenweg Amsterdam

The pattern

This still is filed under Lettered cover hook.

Define

The cover is the hook, and the hook is lettering: a title treated as an image.

Mechanism

Type as bait. The words are drawn so they stop the hand before the contents are known.

Verdict

A journal, book, or issue must sell itself on a rack or a feed

Read the pattern

Why it works

The entire sheet runs at one line weight. Because the lettering is drawn at the same hairline as the ornament, type and drawing read as one continuous act rather than as a frame with type dropped in. The ornament is driven hard into the corners and the centre is left as a pool of blank paper, which is what actually makes four lines of thin capitals legible at distance. Tracking the letters wide instead of setting them large buys presence without buying weight, and that is the whole pitch: a piano shop selling restraint, where a heavy poster would read as a bargain warehouse.

Steal this when

The brand has to read as refined rather than loud: instruments, jewellery, a private clinic, a law practice. Match the letter weight to the ornament weight exactly, drive all decoration to the edges, and win the centre with empty paper instead of size.
