Ontwerp voor band en rug van: Alexander Cohen, Van anarchist tot monarchist, 1936

The pattern

This still is filed under Lettered cover hook.

Define

The cover is the hook, and the hook is lettering: a title treated as an image.

Mechanism

Type as bait. The words are drawn so they stop the hand before the contents are known.

Verdict

A journal, book, or issue must sell itself on a rack or a feed

Why it works

Author at the top, title at the foot, image in the middle is the plainest case layout there is, and it is the right one here because the title itself carries the hook - any composition competing with those four words would weaken them. Setting the title as two lines of matched width turns the opposition into something visible: one word stacked directly over its contrary. The lettering is drawn rather than typeset so it matches the ink weight and the brush edge of the illustration block, which is what stops a hand-cut design reading as a picture with type dropped on it. Working the spine out on the same sheet at true proportion is the discipline most cover work skips and then regrets on press.

Steal this when

Use this when the title is the strongest asset you have: centre the artwork, give the words the top and bottom edges, and set the two halves of an opposition on two lines of equal width. The sheet is also a model for presenting a cover with its spine and its production notes in a single view.
