Lettered cover hook

Moods (1895) - poster

The pattern

This still is filed under Lettered cover hook.

Define

The cover is the hook, and the hook is lettering: a title treated as an image.

Mechanism

Type as bait. The words are drawn so they stop the hand before the contents are known.

Verdict

A journal, book, or issue must sell itself on a rack or a feed

Why it works

Everything is built on reversal: the figures, the title and the text panel are all bare paper, and the single green ink is the ground. That gets three apparent values out of one press run and makes cheap stock look deliberate. The title is drawn inside the picture and partly overlapped by the figures, so it reads as part of the scene rather than as a label stuck on top. The blackletter panel is quarantined in one corner, so the sheet reads as an image first and as information second, which is the correct order for a poster seen at distance.

Steal this when

Use this when you have one ink and rough stock and still need the piece to look art-directed: flood the colour, reverse the subject and the type out of it, and let the paper be your second colour. Also right when the product is an atmosphere or a point of view rather than a feature list.
