Why it works
The sheet is held at a single dark value so that one lit shape, the hanged man's shirt, takes the eye with no competition, which is tonal control doing the job colour usually does in a poster. The discoverer is turned away and kept in shadow with no readable face, so the viewer occupies that position rather than watching someone else react. The moment chosen is unresolved and uncaptioned: no cause, no aftermath, no explanation, which is exactly the open loop a serial needs, because the only way to close it is to buy the next instalment. It behaves like an illustration rather than an advertisement, and that is the point, since it sells fiction by giving a sample of the fiction.
Steal this when
Use this when promoting serialised or episodic content: pick the single unresolved instant, show it without a caption that resolves it, and let the absence of explanation do the selling.
