La Réforme, le 21 Novembre, le masque anarchiste
The pattern
This still is filed under Lettered cover hook.
Define
The cover is the hook, and the hook is lettering: a title treated as an image.
Mechanism
Type as bait. The words are drawn so they stop the hand before the contents are known.
Verdict
A journal, book, or issue must sell itself on a rack or a feed
Why it works
The lettering is not placed on top of the image, it is woven into it - reeds pass behind and in front of the capitals - so the sheet reads as one drawn surface rather than a headline plus a picture. Two lettering registers do two jobs: rigid outlined capitals for the paper's permanent name, and a fast informal hand for the perishable information, the date and this week's title. The vertical side panel makes the argument the main scene cannot: it names Montjuich and shows the consequence, which reframes the violence as political rather than merely lurid. Cold greens everywhere leave the two hits of red - the blood and the word in the border - as the only warm points on the sheet, and they land on exactly the two things the poster wants remembered.
Steal this when
Use this when one masthead has to carry a different story every week: draw the permanent name as fixed lettering and keep a second, looser register for the date and the episode title. The narrow side panel is the device to steal when a poster must name its subject without breaking into the main image.
