The pattern

This still is filed under Lettered cover hook.

Define

The cover is the hook, and the hook is lettering: a title treated as an image.

Mechanism

Type as bait. The words are drawn so they stop the hand before the contents are known.

Verdict

A journal, book, or issue must sell itself on a rack or a feed

Why it works

The drawing and the lettering share one diagonal edge, so the black mass and the empty paper read as a single shape instead of picture-plus-caption. Setting the title on a slope makes the eye climb it, which slows reading and suits a subject that is about seeing things. Everything a publisher would normally add - subtitle, blurb, ornament - is absent, so the only support the title gets is Flaubert's name in small caps, and the unexplained image does the work a promise would usually do.

Steal this when

Steal the diagonal split when a cover has to carry mood rather than a claim, and you have one strong image plus a title famous enough to need no support. It is the right structure when adding explanation would kill the thing you are selling.
