Why it works
Lettering is treated as texture rather than as information, so the nine lines pack a dark rectangle of uniform tone that balances the drawn panel opposite, and the eye reads the cover as a two-panel composition before it reads a single word. Reversing the lettering out of solid black lets the hand-drawn letterforms hold together at small size where a fine outlined face would crumble in lithography. The unbroken frame carried across the spine makes the flat sheet read as one continuous object, which is the point of a binding design as opposed to a cover design.
Steal this when
Use this when the document is proof of the organisation's own craft, an annual report from a design school, studio or maker, and the cover has to demonstrate capability rather than describe it. Set the whole title as drawn lettering in a solid block, and pair it with one abstract panel of equal visual weight.
