Why it works
The drawing is a layout decision made before any drawing of content: the designer commits the entire ornamental budget to one narrow strip and buys silence for everything else. Placing that strip against the left rule ties the illustration to the spine, so the book still signals itself when shelved with only an inch showing. The four ruled lines are the real content of the sheet - they set the type measure and the line intervals in advance, which means the lettering will be fitted to the architecture rather than the architecture adjusted around the lettering. Faceting the figure lets a human form survive being compressed into a column a fifth of the page wide without turning into a blur.
Steal this when
Use this when a cover, a page or a screen has to carry an image and a lot of quiet text, and you want the image confined to a column rather than competing across the whole field. The habit worth stealing is the ruling itself: fix the type baselines on the layout sheet first, then draw the illustration to fit the space that is left.
