Bandontwerp voor: Nannie van Wehl, Het moeilijke begin, 1915
The pattern
This still is filed under Lettered cover hook.
Define
The cover is the hook, and the hook is lettering: a title treated as an image.
Mechanism
Type as bait. The words are drawn so they stop the hand before the contents are known.
Verdict
A journal, book, or issue must sell itself on a rack or a feed
Why it works
The cover answers the title's abstraction with one concrete posture, bent forward and pen down, so the difficult beginning is read as work rather than as mood. Two flat washes split the sheet and the lettering is set across the join, which locks the words into the picture instead of parking them in a band above it. Leaving the figure's clothes as untouched paper makes her the brightest shape on a coloured ground with no modelling required, which is also what makes the design cheap to print.
Steal this when
You need a cover or key image for something whose title is abstract. Find the single physical posture that performs the abstraction, then run the lettering across the colour break so the words and the picture cannot be separated.
