Why it works
The figure and the ornament share one contour system, so the eye cannot find the edge where woman stops and pattern starts, which is the literal argument of the title. The oversized M is not decoration, it is a structural hinge that ties the title block into the interlace and stops the lettering floating as a label. Toorop reserves the only quiet area of the sheet for the title, so a busy surface still resolves to one reading point. Back board and spine restate the same motif in progressively stricter geometry, which gives the object a rhythm as it is turned.
