Why it works
The design does its symbolic work with geometry rather than illustration - the flower is drawn on a compass and a centre line, so it reads as an emblem or device rather than a botanical picture, which lets it stand for the poet's whole subject without illustrating any one poem. The ornament and the lettering are stroked at the same weight and the lettering is squared to match the ornament's flat-sided forms, so a case stamped from a single die on cloth holds together as one drawn object. Building the composition on a strict vertical axis with the flower dead centre and the title centred beneath it gives a cheap one-colour binding the ceremony of a title page.
Steal this when
You are designing a cover, a series mark or a monogram that has to reproduce in one colour, one die, or at small size. Build the symbol on an axis with compass geometry, then square the lettering to the same stroke weight so device and type read as one mark.
