Why it works
The lettering is doing three jobs at once: naming the book, carrying the illustration inside its counters, and generating the ornament that wraps the whole case. Because the spear-like extensions cross the spine, the back cover is unified with the front without needing any second design. Restricting the picture to the inside of a single letter keeps the cover graphic at shelf distance while still delivering imagery to anyone who picks the book up.
Steal this when
Steal this when a title has to work as the entire visual - put the image inside the letterform rather than beside it, and let one letter's extensions generate the surrounding pattern. Right for packaging or covers where a full illustration would be too busy or too expensive.
