Bandontwerp voor: E.T.A. Hoffmann, Notenkraker en muizenkoning, 1898
The pattern
This still is filed under Lettered cover hook.
Define
The cover is the hook, and the hook is lettering: a title treated as an image.
Mechanism
Type as bait. The words are drawn so they stop the hand before the contents are known.
Verdict
A journal, book, or issue must sell itself on a rack or a feed
Why it works
The sheet shows the order of decisions. The frame and the empty type band are ruled first, so the composition is designed into a fixed area with the lettering space reserved before a single figure exists - the opposite of drawing an illustration and then finding room for type. The dark crosshatched canopy is pressed into the top corners to keep the eye from leaving the frame, and the two figures are deliberately small so the wood, not the characters, carries the mood. Nothing is finished because nothing needs to be: at this stage only the silhouette mass and the placement are being tested.
Steal this when
You are working out a cover or a key visual and keep getting stuck on rendering. Rule the live area and the type band first, then block only the mass and placement in pencil until the composition holds at thumbnail size.
