Why it works
The design substitutes material for message completely. With no title and no picture, value can only be signalled by cost and by labour, so every square millimetre of the display face is occupied by either a stone or a filigree curl and the eye reads that density directly as expense. The clasps are functional jewellery, which lets the book be held and worn like an ornament rather than merely read. And the restraint elsewhere is what makes it work: plain brushed gilt on the edges and the lower board gives the jewelled face a quiet field to sit against, so the ornament concentrates into one surface instead of exhausting the whole object.
Steal this when
Use this logic when the product inside is ordinary and widely available: spend the whole budget on the single surface the buyer shows to other people, and keep every other surface deliberately plain so that one surface reads as the point.
