Anatomy of a Murder (film poster)
The pattern
This still is filed under Lettered cover hook.
Define
The cover is the hook, and the hook is lettering: a title treated as an image.
Mechanism
Type as bait. The words are drawn so they stop the hand before the contents are known.
Verdict
A journal, book, or issue must sell itself on a rack or a feed
Why it works
The title is drawn rather than typeset, and the letters live inside the limbs, so word and picture become one object that cannot be remembered separately. Cutting the figure apart states anatomy and murder at the same time without depicting any violence, which keeps the sheet printable in every newspaper and lobby. Leading with the bestseller claim borrows an audience that already exists instead of building one, and hollow outlined cast names let six stars share one panel without any of them shouting. The torn edges and offset panels make an expensive studio sheet look hand-assembled, which is exactly what separated it from the airbrushed one-sheets hanging beside it.
Steal this when
When the name of the thing contains a physical idea, build the logotype out of that idea instead of setting type over an illustration. Open with the borrowed-audience line whenever the work already has a hit in another medium behind it.
