Whiting's ledger papers (1895) - poster
The pattern
This still is filed under Keepable trade card.
Define
A small card people keep (pretty, useful, or collectible) that carries the brand after the encounter.
Mechanism
Retention object. The gift is the media. Recall is paid for by usefulness or delight, not by repetition.
Verdict
We can put a physical or digital keepable in someone's pocket and they will not throw it away.
Why it works
The copy block is designed, not dropped in. Colouring every initial capital orange breaks a dense paragraph into visual chunks, ties the text to the picture palette, and pulls the eye down to the ask at the bottom, which is the only real instruction on the card. Benefits are stated as physical properties a ledger clerk can verify by hand, surface, erasing, wear, because the buyer of a commodity needs a specification, not an adjective. The ask itself is the move: it is aimed past the retailer at the end user and tells them exactly what sentence to say when ordering.
Steal this when
Use this when you sell an ingredient or component the end user does not buy directly. Give them the attribute language and the exact words to specify you by name at their next order, and the channel is forced to stock you.
