Wallpaper Invoice for the firm of Arthur et Robert
The pattern
This still is filed under Keepable trade card.
Define
A small card people keep (pretty, useful, or collectible) that carries the brand after the encounter.
Mechanism
Retention object. The gift is the media. Recall is paid for by usefulness or delight, not by repetition.
Verdict
We can put a physical or digital keepable in someone's pocket and they will not throw it away.
Why it works
The engraved plate does the branding once and the clerk does the rest, which is why a firm could afford a designed document at all in 1793 - the expensive part is fixed, the variable part is free. Wrapping the script around a central vignette instead of stacking a logo above a line of type makes the header read as a single engraved picture, so the customer handles a small print rather than a form. The plinth, the allegorical figures and the sheaf are all borrowed prestige signals from architecture and coinage, applied to a product that is literally paper on a wall. Note the revolutionary date stamp buried in the wording: customers are Citoyens and the address is Rue des Piques, so even the letterhead is politically current.
Steal this when
You send a recurring transactional document - invoice, statement, packing note, receipt - to customers who bought something aesthetic, and the document is currently the ugliest thing they receive from you. Fix the fixed part once, at a higher craft level than the rest of your material, and let the variable data stay plain.
