The pattern

This still is filed under Keepable trade card.

Define

A small card people keep (pretty, useful, or collectible) that carries the brand after the encounter.

Mechanism

Retention object. The gift is the media. Recall is paid for by usefulness or delight, not by repetition.

Verdict

We can put a physical or digital keepable in someone's pocket and they will not throw it away.

Why it works

The hardest thing to sell on a card is work that does not exist yet, so Viner sells evidence instead. The sketchbook conceit does two jobs at once: it says he draws for a living, and it gives a throwaway card the weight of a dated object with an order book. The centre vignette is one specific commission, named and located, which is a far stronger claim than every style of architecture; the five loose corner sketches then show range without a capability list. Curving all the lettering around the oval keeps words subordinate to drawing, the right hierarchy for a man selling drawing.

Steal this when

Use this when you sell design, or any service whose output is the only credible sample. Put one named, real, in-progress job at the centre and scatter smaller finished pieces around it so range is shown rather than listed.
