Trade card of the print dealer Edmond Sagot, Paris
The pattern
This still is filed under Keepable trade card.
Define
A small card people keep (pretty, useful, or collectible) that carries the brand after the encounter.
Mechanism
Retention object. The gift is the media. Recall is paid for by usefulness or delight, not by repetition.
Verdict
We can put a physical or digital keepable in someone's pocket and they will not throw it away.
Why it works
The advertisement demonstrates the goods by being the goods, which is the strongest form a specialist dealer can use - you cannot doubt the quality of the printing while holding it. The name is not a logo laid over the picture but lettering drawn inside the scene, painted on the shop wall, so the brand reads as a place rather than a mark. The subject sells atmosphere instead of stock: a quiet woman waiting under a rack of prints tells the buyer what kind of shop this is and what kind of customer belongs in it. Wide margins and a pencil signature turn an advertisement into a collectable, which is how it survived to be catalogued at all.
Steal this when
Steal this when you sell craft and the buyer judges you on a sample - make the advertisement itself the demonstration of the work. It is also the move when your identity should read as a place people go rather than a mark on a page.
