The pattern

This still is filed under Keepable trade card.

Define

A small card people keep (pretty, useful, or collectible) that carries the brand after the encounter.

Mechanism

Retention object. The gift is the media. Recall is paid for by usefulness or delight, not by repetition.

Verdict

We can put a physical or digital keepable in someone's pocket and they will not throw it away.

Read the pattern

Why it works

Driving the team straight at the viewer instead of showing the carriage in profile is the decision that carries the card, because a profile would sell the object and a head-on view sells the arrival. The vignette is left unframed and fades into the paper, which reads as expensive restraint next to the framed chromolithographed cards of cheaper trades. The passengers do the qualifying: seven people in full dress on the roof state the class of client without a word of copy, so the type can stay purely factual. The parenthetical of Broome St. is a defensive trademark device, distinguishing the original firm from rival Brewsters, and it is set small precisely so it reads as an established fact rather than an argument.

Steal this when

Use this when the product is bought on status and the buyer already knows the category, so description only cheapens it. Show the thing in use, populated by the exact people the buyer wants to be mistaken for, then let the name, the trade and the address be the entire copy.
