The pattern

This still is filed under Keepable trade card.

Define

A small card people keep (pretty, useful, or collectible) that carries the brand after the encounter.

Mechanism

Retention object. The gift is the media. Recall is paid for by usefulness or delight, not by repetition.

Verdict

We can put a physical or digital keepable in someone's pocket and they will not throw it away.

Read the pattern

Why it works

The shop sign is promoted from wayfinding device to logo: it sits alone in a blank oval where a coat of arms would normally go, framed by a crown, which teaches the buyer to read a piece of street furniture as a mark of the house. The surrounding clutter of goods is not decoration but a stock list drawn instead of written, so the range registers before a single word is read. The crowned city arms at the crest transfers civic authority down the composition to the merchant's name at the foot. Text is confined to one flat panel at the bottom, which keeps the picture doing the selling and the words doing only the specifying.

Steal this when

Use this when a business already owns a physical mark people navigate by - a storefront, a sign, a building, a vehicle livery - and you want that mark to become the brand rather than a separate logo. It is also the right structure when the range is the proposition and listing it in prose would read as a warehouse inventory.
