Trade card for the Scheltema en Holkema bookshop
The pattern
This still is filed under Keepable trade card.
Define
A small card people keep (pretty, useful, or collectible) that carries the brand after the encounter.
Mechanism
Retention object. The gift is the media. Recall is paid for by usefulness or delight, not by repetition.
Verdict
We can put a physical or digital keepable in someone's pocket and they will not throw it away.
Why it works
The shop is characterised by activity rather than inventory: putti scrambling up ladders and hauling volumes away make the place look busy, which reads as popular without a word of claim. The lettered spines do the persuasion - Dante and Goethe signal literary seriousness, Ziemssen's pathology handbook signals professional and scientific stock, so the range is demonstrated by naming three points on a spectrum rather than describing the whole. The address is engraved onto a book cover instead of being set as a line of type, which smuggles the only practical information into the picture where the eye is already working. Putti allow the disorder to read as charm; adult figures making the same mess would read as chaos.
Steal this when
Use this when the proposition is breadth and you cannot list the catalogue - put three deliberately distant named items in view and let the reader infer everything between them. The device of lettering the address onto an object inside the scene is worth stealing whenever a layout has no clean place for a contact line.
