Trade card for Maison Jacquin Jeune, garden supplier, Paris
The pattern
This still is filed under Keepable trade card.
Define
A small card people keep (pretty, useful, or collectible) that carries the brand after the encounter.
Mechanism
Retention object. The gift is the media. Recall is paid for by usefulness or delight, not by repetition.
Verdict
We can put a physical or digital keepable in someone's pocket and they will not throw it away.
Why it works
The card is laid out as a catalogue in miniature: by splitting the four product classes into balanced pairs flanking the vignette, it lets a reader take in the entire range at a glance without reading a list. The lineage line is the persuasion, converting a change of ownership into a credential by naming every earlier form of the house, and repeating the old address so continuity of trade is provable. The blue overprint shows the same sheet being re-used by the next proprietor, which is why the type does not match, and is a working example of stock stationery updated rather than reprinted.
Steal this when
Use this structure when a business has a short name but a long history and several distinct product lines, and one small surface has to carry both. The flanking-pairs layout is the move whenever a list would be read as a list and ignored.
