Trade card for John Barrow, jeweller
The pattern
This still is filed under Keepable trade card.
Define
A small card people keep (pretty, useful, or collectible) that carries the brand after the encounter.
Mechanism
Retention object. The gift is the media. Recall is paid for by usefulness or delight, not by repetition.
Verdict
We can put a physical or digital keepable in someone's pocket and they will not throw it away.
Why it works
The portrait is the argument. In a trade where the real purchase is the honesty of the man handling gold, collapsing artist, maker and merchant into one face you can hold in your hand does more than any list of stock. The motto performs the second job, claiming a moral position rather than a commercial one, which lifts a tradesman toward the status of his gentry customers. Typographically the name is the only line in capitals, so the eye goes portrait, then name, and reads the motto afterwards as texture rather than as a claim to be argued with.
Steal this when
Reach for this when the person is the product and trust is the barrier: a solo practitioner, a craftsman, an advisor. One real portrait plus one line of stated values outperforms a list of services on the same card.
