The pattern

This still is filed under Keepable trade card.

Define

A small card people keep (pretty, useful, or collectible) that carries the brand after the encounter.

Mechanism

Retention object. The gift is the media. Recall is paid for by usefulness or delight, not by repetition.

Verdict

We can put a physical or digital keepable in someone's pocket and they will not throw it away.

Why it works

The proof and the product are the same object: every scroll, every fine white highlight and every gradation of hatching in the frame is a sample of what glyphography can reproduce, so the buyer evaluates the process by looking at the advertisement rather than by trusting a claim. Two colours separate the two jobs - lilac for the process specimen, black letterpress for the message - which also demonstrates the real commercial argument, that a glyphographic block sets in the same forme as ordinary type. The message block is deliberately plain and centred, so the contrast between austere type and virtuoso ornament is legible at a glance. The turn-over instruction converts a business card into a two-stage document and buys the seller a second page of argument.

Steal this when

This is the model whenever the product is a capability rather than an object - a printing method, a manufacturing tolerance, a rendering engine, a typeface - and the honest demonstration is to build the promotional piece out of it. Use the split-colour device when you need to show a technique and still deliver a plain, readable message on the same face.
