Trade card for Christiaan Beuning, gold and silver thread merchant
The pattern
This still is filed under Keepable trade card.
Define
A small card people keep (pretty, useful, or collectible) that carries the brand after the encounter.
Mechanism
Retention object. The gift is the media. Recall is paid for by usefulness or delight, not by repetition.
Verdict
We can put a physical or digital keepable in someone's pocket and they will not throw it away.
Why it works
The plate names nothing and claims nothing; it shows. Dutch shops were known by a house sign rather than a proprietor's name, so the script banderole and the village strip above it are the mark, and the topographic view turns an arbitrary sign into a place the customer can picture. The perspective is set at customer eye level with the counter sale on one side and the work of the trade on the other, so one plate says both we serve you and we handle the goods ourselves. Boxes opened in the foreground pull the reader over the threshold rather than leaving them outside looking in.
Steal this when
Use this when your business name is arbitrary and the problem is getting it to stick. Give the name a picture that explains it, and set that picture directly above a scene of the business being used.
