The education of Mr. Pipp by C. D. Gibson - poster
The pattern
This still is filed under Keepable trade card.
Define
A small card people keep (pretty, useful, or collectible) that carries the brand after the encounter.
Mechanism
Retention object. The gift is the media. Recall is paid for by usefulness or delight, not by repetition.
Verdict
We can put a physical or digital keepable in someone's pocket and they will not throw it away.
Why it works
The card is a shelf-talker pretending to be a poster. The title and the closing line are set at the same weight, so the eye lands on what it is and where to get it in a single pass, and everything between them is credit. Putting the comic character inside a picture frame held by the glamorous woman states the book's premise, that Pipp is the object of amused female inspection, without a line of description. One ink keeps it cheap enough to hand out by the hundred to every shop that stocked the title.
Steal this when
Use this when a retailer or partner is displaying your product and the only job of the piece is to name the thing, prove its tone with one image, and say it can be bought right here. Strongest when the creator's style is recognisable enough to work as the whole visual.
