T.S. & J.D. Negus trade card
The pattern
This still is filed under Keepable trade card.
Define
A small card people keep (pretty, useful, or collectible) that carries the brand after the encounter.
Mechanism
Retention object. The gift is the media. Recall is paid for by usefulness or delight, not by repetition.
Verdict
We can put a physical or digital keepable in someone's pocket and they will not throw it away.
Why it works
The lines are ordered as the questions a captain would ask, in order: who are you, what do you make, what do you do for a ship like mine, what can I buy off the shelf, why should I believe you, where do I come. The one credential that settles the sale - maker to the Navy - is held back to the fifth line, after the reader has already found something he needs, so it lands as confirmation rather than as a boast. Changing typeface on every line instead of changing size lets a card the size of a palm carry six distinct messages without any of them shouting.
Steal this when
Use on a business card, a one-line directory entry or any space too small for layout, where the whole job is to be found and believed. Order the lines as the buyer's questions and place your strongest credential just after the line that names what he wants.
