Keepable trade card

Sheet of trade and visiting cards collected by G. H. Breitner

The pattern

This still is filed under Keepable trade card.

Define

A small card people keep (pretty, useful, or collectible) that carries the brand after the encounter.

Mechanism

Retention object. The gift is the media. Recall is paid for by usefulness or delight, not by repetition.

Verdict

We can put a physical or digital keepable in someone's pocket and they will not throw it away.

Why it works

The format works because the blank centre is the message surface. The printed matter is fixed and impersonal - name, street, town - and everything situational is added in ink at the moment of use, so one printed run serves condolence, congratulation and an ordinary call. The abbreviations are the efficiency: two pencilled letters stand in for a whole sentence of formula, understood by everyone in the class that used them, which is compressed code rather than shorthand. Typographically the restraint is the status claim - no border, no flourish, no trade, just a name given the full width of the card. The one card that lists a profession and a speciality breaks the convention deliberately, and the three-step size cascade shows exactly how a professional signalled competence without appearing to advertise.

Steal this when

Steal this when an identity has to work across many unrelated occasions and you cannot print a version for each. Print only the invariant facts, design a deliberate empty zone, and let the sender supply the occasion by hand.
