Keepable trade card

Novels by Marie Corelli - poster

The pattern

This still is filed under Keepable trade card.

Define

A small card people keep (pretty, useful, or collectible) that carries the brand after the encounter.

Mechanism

Retention object. The gift is the media. Recall is paid for by usefulness or delight, not by repetition.

Verdict

We can put a physical or digital keepable in someone's pocket and they will not throw it away.

Why it works

Only two lines are reversed out, the author's name and the place to buy, so the card answers who and where before a browser has read a single title. The seven titles in between are set small and uniform, which makes them scan as inventory rather than seven competing claims fighting each other. The floral border does the job an illustration would do, giving the card presence in a window without adding a second thing to look at or a second idea to process. This is point-of-sale furniture: it assumes the demand already exists and only has to close the last three feet.

Steal this when

Use this when the name already sells and the only job left is converting existing demand where the purchase happens, such as an author, a creator or a brand with a backlist. List the catalogue plain, reverse out the name and the where-to-buy, and skip the argument entirely.
