The pattern

This still is filed under Keepable trade card.

Define

A small card people keep (pretty, useful, or collectible) that carries the brand after the encounter.

Mechanism

Retention object. The gift is the media. Recall is paid for by usefulness or delight, not by repetition.

Verdict

We can put a physical or digital keepable in someone's pocket and they will not throw it away.

Why it works

The scale trick carries the card: the packet is drawn many times life size, so a product too small to picture becomes the second subject and its label is readable across a room. The child is the era's standard attention device but she is given a job here, presenting the pack like a sandwich board rather than posing beside it. The ASK FOR construction is the entire strategy in two words, because needles were sold loose and unbranded by shopkeepers, so the work is to move demand out of the retailer's hands and into the customer's mouth. Gold ground and white hand-lettering signal luxury on a giveaway, which is what makes a throwaway get kept and pasted into an album.

Steal this when

Use this when the retailer, not the buyer, currently picks the brand: make the pack oversized, make the instruction literal, and give the customer the exact words to say. It is also the fix whenever the real product is too small or too dull to photograph.
