The pattern

This still is filed under Keepable trade card.

Define

A small card people keep (pretty, useful, or collectible) that carries the brand after the encounter.

Mechanism

Retention object. The gift is the media. Recall is paid for by usefulness or delight, not by repetition.

Verdict

We can put a physical or digital keepable in someone's pocket and they will not throw it away.

Read the pattern

Why it works

The proposition is delivered as overheard dialogue between two children, which removes the advertiser from the sentence entirely, and the reader accepts a recommendation from a peer that they would resist from a manufacturer. The two bodies are the product demonstration, the round baby against the lean boy makes the before and after argument without a word of comparison copy, which is why the card survives being printed in a single colour. The hand-lettered speech in the illustration versus typeset roman in the trade block keeps persuasion and business plainly separated, so the sell never feels like an announcement. The free book converts a scrap of counter ephemera into a name and address, which is the actual transaction.

Steal this when

Use this when the product's benefit is visible on the body or on the object itself, and one frame can carry a before and after. Let a user say the line in a speech balloon, and park the offer and the address in plain type below the picture where they cannot dilute it.
