Clark's O.N.T. Spool Cotton Christmas trade card
The pattern
This still is filed under Keepable trade card.
Define
A small card people keep (pretty, useful, or collectible) that carries the brand after the encounter.
Mechanism
Retention object. The gift is the media. Recall is paid for by usefulness or delight, not by repetition.
Verdict
We can put a physical or digital keepable in someone's pocket and they will not throw it away.
Why it works
The card carries no selling copy at all - the entire message is that the brand wishes you well, which is the earliest form of the goodwill premium. Scaling the trademark to the size of a prop, and letting a child stand on it and a ribbon tie to it, makes the mark an object in the scene rather than a logo laid over one, so the eye reads it as part of the picture and retains it without resistance. The domestic vignette on the right does the product's real work silently: a mother, a child, a fireplace and a hand-worked stocking is thread in use, never named. Two greetings on one sheet double the occasions the card is displayed, stretching one print run from late December into January.
Steal this when
Use this when your product is a boring input to something people care about, and direct claims would be ignored. Buy attention with a seasonal gift the household will display, put your mark in the picture as a physical object, and let the scene show the product in use without a word of copy.
