The pattern

This still is filed under Keepable trade card.

Define

A small card people keep (pretty, useful, or collectible) that carries the brand after the encounter.

Mechanism

Retention object. The gift is the media. Recall is paid for by usefulness or delight, not by repetition.

Verdict

We can put a physical or digital keepable in someone's pocket and they will not throw it away.

Why it works

Mirroring the design on both panels means the card advertises correctly whether it is folded, open, or lying face down - a cheap way to double impressions on a single sheet. The trademark is drawn as the physical end of the spool she will actually see in her hand, so the mark on the card and the mark on the product are the same picture; that is recognition rather than recall. Printing the thread sizes inside the trademark converts the ornament into a specification, quietly teaching the buyer to ask for a brand and a number together, which is harder for a clerk to substitute. The year overprinted in red is the only colour break on the card and is the cheapest possible annual reissue - one plate change keeps a static design current.

Steal this when

Use this when you reissue the same useful asset every year and want the update to cost one plate rather than a redesign. Also steal the mirrored-panel trick for any folded or double-sided piece where you cannot control which face is seen first.
