An old trade card (George Inn, Southwark)
The pattern
This still is filed under Keepable trade card.
Define
A small card people keep (pretty, useful, or collectible) that carries the brand after the encounter.
Mechanism
Retention object. The gift is the media. Recall is paid for by usefulness or delight, not by repetition.
Verdict
We can put a physical or digital keepable in someone's pocket and they will not throw it away.
Why it works
The whole card is built on specificity as proof. It never claims to be fast or careful in the abstract; it names the departure morning, the arrival morning, the return evening and the inn, so the reader can plan against it and hold the carrier to it. The place list is the second mechanism: a customer in a small village scans for his own name, finds it, and the advertisement has qualified itself to him without a word of persuasion. The typography does the routing - small capitals are used only on days and places, which turns the paragraph into a scannable timetable while it still reads as prose. The vignette supplies scale: eight horses and a loaded tilt waggon tell a consignor at a glance that his goods are not going by pony cart.
Steal this when
Steal this when you sell a route, a schedule or a coverage area and the real objection is whether you actually serve the customer's particular case. List the named stops, days and endpoints instead of adjectives, and let the reader qualify himself by finding his own location in the list.
