The pocket magazine, April, 1896 - poster
The pattern
This still is filed under Issue-as-product mood sell.
Define
The issue is sold as a feeling: a face, a color field, a stance. Not as a table of contents.
Mechanism
Mood as SKU. The reader buys the atmosphere and trusts the articles will match. Zoning and figure do the listing's job.
Verdict
We publish a periodical or drop and the buyer chooses identity before they choose an article.
Why it works
The contents list is the ad. Instead of describing the magazine it prints six titles and six bylines, so the reader self-selects on an author they already trust and the poster never has to make a claim it cannot back. The illustrated figure's arm deliberately crosses the frame into the text column, stitching picture and type into one object so the eye is handed from the art to the contents rather than choosing between them. Two inks on cream keep the whole thing cheap enough to post everywhere, and the price sits directly under the title where it answers the first objection before the list starts.
Steal this when
Use this when your product is an anthology of named things - an issue, a course, a conference, a bundle - and the names are better known than the container. List them plainly with the price up top and let the roster do the persuading.
