Lippincott's December (1895) - poster
The pattern
This still is filed under Issue-as-product mood sell.
Define
The issue is sold as a feeling: a face, a color field, a stance. Not as a table of contents.
Mechanism
Mood as SKU. The reader buys the atmosphere and trusts the articles will match. Zoning and figure do the listing's job.
Verdict
We publish a periodical or drop and the buyer chooses identity before they choose an article.
Why it works
The month is the product, so the month gets top and bottom billing in the same weight of type and the picture only has to make December felt; the stippled snow screen and the single sprig of holly date the sheet in one second without a word of copy. Running the figure in front of the lettering puts type and image on one plane and makes the poster read as a single object rather than a caption over a picture. The miniature cover under her arm is the whole sales argument in miniature, contents named, publisher named, price named, rendered small enough that it rewards a reader who steps closer, which is exactly how a bill-posted sheet gets studied.
Steal this when
Steal this when your product is a dated edition or a recurring drop and the month or issue label is the strongest thing you own; set it as large as the brand. Also steal the product-in-hand miniature when the detailed selling information would wreck the poster at full size but is worth putting there for anyone who comes close.
