If-then promise

-his sore throat may be yours tomorrow!

The pattern

This still is filed under If-then promise.

Define

A conditional contract: if you do this, you get that. The sentence can be tested against the reader's own case.

Mechanism

Specificity does the persuading. The if names the action. The then names the outcome. Hedging kills it.

Verdict

We can name both the action and the result without adjectives

Read the pattern

Why it works

The headline starts on an em dash mid-thought, which forces the reader to look up at the picture for the antecedent and makes the man on the streetcar the subject of the sentence. That converts a generic health warning into a specific threat located in a scene the reader was in this morning. The two culture plates are a demonstration rather than a claim: before and after in one glance, with no need to read the body copy at all. The care for the throat regularly as you care for your teeth analogy is the commercial engine, because it reframes a remedy bought once during illness into a habit bought continuously when well, and the 2 cent stamp makes the reader pay something small, which qualifies the lead.

Steal this when

Use this when your product prevents something people only treat after it happens. Locate the threat in an ordinary scene the reader repeats daily, then anchor the new habit to one they already perform without thinking.
