House ad as portfolio

The clown's competition

The pattern

This still is filed under House ad as portfolio.

Define

The firm advertises itself by showing the work, not by describing the work.

Mechanism

Proof by exhibit. The portfolio is the claim. Captions stay short. The pieces carry the argument.

Verdict

We sell craft and the buyer can judge from examples.

Read the pattern

Why it works

The argument is made entirely by staging two scenes on the same street and letting the reader compare the takings, pennies thrown to the clown against money spent in the shop. Embarrassment is the hinge: the crowd steals away hoping no one noticed them, which marks stunt attention as something people want to get away from. Only after the parable is complete does the word advertising appear, so the reader has already reached the verdict before he knows it applies to his budget. The final distinction, between attention and the kind of attention that leads into a sale, gives him a test he can apply to his own next ad.

Steal this when

Use this when a client is chasing reach or novelty and you need to move him to relevance without insulting his last campaign. Build a two-scene parable where the flashy option visibly earns less, then state the distinction as a test.
