Guiding human decisions
The pattern
This still is filed under House ad as portfolio.
Define
The firm advertises itself by showing the work, not by describing the work.
Mechanism
Proof by exhibit. The portfolio is the claim. Captions stay short. The pieces carry the argument.
Verdict
We sell craft and the buyer can judge from examples.
Why it works
It reframes advertising from persuasion, which the reader thinks of as soft, to actuarial prediction, which he thinks of as hard, and it does so by borrowing proof from outside commerce entirely. Crime rates, misaddressed letters and suicide statistics have nothing to sell, so the reader accepts them as disinterested, then carries that acceptance across to the claim about buying shoes. The essay opens on the reader's own competence at personal selling before showing where it cannot reach, which flatters rather than corrects him. The huge white space around a two-word abstract headline signals confidence and separates the page from the dense trade advertising around it.
Steal this when
Use this when you sell an intangible service whose value is doubted and you need to borrow authority from a harder discipline, citing an outside body of evidence that is famous, non-commercial and checkable. Also the right shape when you want to argue a principle rather than show a case, and your differentiator is a way of thinking rather than a result.
