After the verbal statement is forgotten
The pattern
This still is filed under House ad as portfolio.
Define
The firm advertises itself by showing the work, not by describing the work.
Mechanism
Proof by exhibit. The portfolio is the claim. Captions stay short. The pieces carry the argument.
Verdict
We sell craft and the buyer can judge from examples.
Why it works
The ad opens with four short interrogatives that put the reader in the position of a reader, not a client, and each one narrows - what did it say, what point did it make, did it really make it, did it make you want the thing. That sequence makes memory the test of an advertisement instead of clarity. The layout then argues its own case: the picture is given a full page opposite a column of quiet type, and the caption is the only line of copy on that page, so the reader experiences the claim before he reads it. The closing idea, that what the reader gets by inference is what he ultimately remembers, is the piece's real contribution, and it is stated once, at the end, without elaboration.
Steal this when
Use this when you are selling a discipline the client treats as decoration. Test him as an audience member first with short questions he cannot answer, then let the artefact on the facing page prove the point before the copy explains it.
