The Penalty of Leadership" - Cadillac (Saturday Evening Post, Jan 2 1915)
The pattern
This still is filed under Headline · visual lockup.
Define
Headline and picture are one sentence. Remove either half and the claim disappears.
Mechanism
Lockup. The line names what the image will not. The image shows what the line cannot. They are not redundant.
Verdict
We have a picture that completes a short line: wit, contrast, or a second meaning.
Why it works
The ad never defends the product, which is precisely why it wins the argument: by shifting from the specific charge to the universal law, it makes any rival's criticism self-incriminating. The three analogies do the proving, each one a case where the crowd was wrong and the leader was right, so the reader arrives at Cadillac's position without Cadillac ever asserting it. Withholding the car, the price and the ask signals that a company at this altitude does not need to sell, which is the status claim the whole page exists to make. The typographic austerity, one column of classical roman inside an engraved frame, imitates a certificate or a proclamation rather than an advertisement.
Steal this when
You are the category leader under attack from cheaper or louder challengers, and answering the charge directly would dignify it. Write the law instead of the rebuttal, prove it with famous cases outside your industry, and refuse to mention the product at all.
