Why it works
The key is the mechanism. Scattering A to Z into the woodcut and listing what each letter is turns a generic burning-town cut - stock imagery in this trade - into a checkable report about one named place, which is what the reader is paying for. The letter framing borrows the credibility of private correspondence: a named sender, a named recipient, a salutation, a specific Thursday, a specific two o'clock. Counts do the rest, standing in for the photograph that did not exist yet. Note the division of labour: the picture carries no argument, the text carries no scene, and the key is the only thing joining them.
