The pattern

This still is filed under Exhibit in the column.

Define

An image is dropped into the column of type so the reader meets picture and argument in one scan.

Mechanism

In-flow exhibit. The figure is not a separate see fig. 2. It starts the paragraph. Eye and mind start together.

Verdict

Long copy must show as well as tell: a product cutaway, a before/after, a map in the story.

Read the pattern

Why it works

Anaphora is used as a typographic device, not just a rhetorical one: repeating HE at the start of every indent turns an argument into a visible tally the eye can count before it reads a word. The piece front-loads a universal premise everyone can assent to, then announces that facts will be submitted, which converts the reader into a juror and each grievance into evidence rather than complaint. The signatures and the printer's imprint at the foot do what a guarantee does in direct mail - they put named people at risk behind the claim, which is why the closing pledge of lives, fortunes and honour lands.

Steal this when

Steal this when you are arguing a decision that will look reckless unless the grounds are visible - a rate rise, an exit, a public break with a partner. Establish the shared principle first, then list the specific instances in identical grammatical form so the pattern, not any single instance, carries the verdict, and sign it with names.
