Sam Lucas' Songs
The pattern
This still is filed under Exhibit in the column.
Define
An image is dropped into the column of type so the reader meets picture and argument in one scan.
Mechanism
In-flow exhibit. The figure is not a separate see fig. 2. It starts the paragraph. Eye and mind start together.
Verdict
Long copy must show as well as tell: a product cutaway, a before/after, a map in the story.
Why it works
This is a catalogue disguised as a cover. The arched display line does the branding, the portrait supplies the person, and the two diagonal fans smuggle roughly twenty separate products with prices onto a page that still reads as one composition instead of a list. Setting the titles on the diagonal is the trick: it lets a long inventory occupy the dead space beside a portrait without competing with the headline, and the eye takes it in as texture first and detail second. The pricing sits at the point of desire, so no separate order form is needed.
Steal this when
You have one recognisable name and a long back catalogue behind it. Lead with the name at display size and the person's face, then fan the full priced list around the portrait so browsing and ordering happen on the same surface.
